The squat movement originates in the 1970s, aiming at occupying vacant living spaces without the knowledge of the property owner. Some of the main motives named for squatting are a desire for free housing space, personal
housing shortage or even homelessness, protest against speculative vacancies and high rents. Most squatters deliberately distinguish themselves from social norms and try to develop alternative forms of coexistence. The self-proclaimed goal of squatters is to save run-down buildings from demolition and to make the habitable again. In the light of rising unemployment, poverty and cuts in the social system, the desire of squatters for free spaces beyond commercial structures is still unbowed in the 21st
century.

Just a two-minute walk away from the hustle and bustle of Austria's largest shopping street, a BUWOG building lies idle in Lindengasse 60. False! It used to lie idle until some curageous squatters opened the house on the day before the world-wide action day on October 15, 2011 in order to create the ... more |

The industrial zone around Triesterstraße in Vienna's 10th district is certainly not the first thing that comes to the mind of someone who thinks about Vienna. But there are some sought-after places in that area as well. One of them is the Triesterstraße 114, which was occupied in the night of Ocotber 2 to 3 by the Gruppe Hausprojekt, fighting for a self-organised space for housing, initiatives and projects ... more |

Unlike in Austria, there is a lively tradition of squatting in France. We have visited one out of several squats in Paris, la gare expérimentale. See our interview with squatter Toni who has spent more than 20 years opening up abandoned houses for new uses. |

On 12 April 2008 a house across from the university campus in Vienna was squatted by activists. The action took place within the international days of action for squats and autonomous spaces, but it wasn't meant to stay only in those borders. Amongst other a workshop on queer-feminist space annexion was a basis for the squatting. |

Many activist groups and intiatives came together for an action day in order to protest against the „allotgarden policy“ of Ursula Stenzel, the head of the district government of Vienna's city center (critics say she tries to seal the inner city off the outer world).
In our report, we introduce you to the groups „Food not bombs“ and „Pankahyttn“ (Punks' Shanty). The latter have some news to tell about their ... more |

Following the initial demonstration of the so-called closing-down action days, a house was squatted right within view of the police. In the video you can see the police officers standing around waiting and seemingly not knowing how to react. The general aim of the closing-down days was to draw attention to the situation of activist groups, independent locations and other 'free spaces' that are fighting for ... more |

Free spaces and independent locations for progressive cultural and political initiatives and events have never been quite widespread in Vienna. Today, it's not just the 'one and only' (well, almost...) Viennese squat named EKH that is resisting it's close-down. Along with other endagered initiatives such as TÜWI (an autonomous students' club), Public Netbase (a new media initiative) and Women´s Cafe (womens' ... more |

Vienna's only remaining squat, the so-called EKH (named after Ernst Kirchweger, an antifascist killed by a right-wing protester in 1965), has become massively endangered. The owner of the house, the Austrian Communist Party (KPÖ), has gone bankrupt and sold the venue, leaving the future the political initiatives and groups in the house unclear. Clandestinely, the EKH was sold to a buyer well-known for his ... more |
